So I have a friend that is trying to go about having relationships in a new way, of relating to people in a new way. In his "way" you don't talk about what you have but just appreciate it, you don't put words on your commitment and love, you give each other freedom and accept how much they choose to use it. No terms of dating or marriage, too messy.
Now, I think this is all great and good (it is after all, with total freedom, how the Creator has chosen to love us) but doesn't work on the human scale. Unlike a god, we have insecurities and need reassurance, we don't know people's hearts and cannot predict their behavior.
I see that people really thrive when they are in a healthy committed relationship. It nurtures their soul to know that they have an other that is in it with them until the end. To share everything, grow with them through all the droughts and storms until harvest time. When we form a union with one other person, we get this symbiosis that goes on, what affects one effects the other, causing both to grow and change. And like plants, if there is not growth, there is death. Having that other person around is like organic fertilizer (can't help and think in terms of plants)- it's slow release with out much interaction, but then when the soil gets warm and activity picks up, there is so much growth and fruit.
So, to sum up my ramblings: friendships are good, but finding that person that you can commit to for life is the best. People are wired to mate for life like many birds and other animal creatures. Our hearts and souls are released to fly and settle into ourselves when we have the security of another's undying love for us to keep us afloat.
